Moving/Fun Day
So last we left off we were in Texas. Texas went by rainy and we crossed into New Mexico coincidentally as Matt's Mix played a song about you guessed it New Mexico!! Thanks Matt. Next came Colorado. We finally made it!!! Our hearts were set on Great Sand Dunes National Park but the storm clouds due west looked troublesome, pushing through one ten minute violent storm burst the clouds lifted and blue skies shined through. So we decided to push on for the dunes. After one more 10 minute storm and an hour drive we neared the great sand dunes. Approaching the park was a 16 mile road with a flat gorgeous field of yellow wild flowers. Half way through the drive we topped a hill which revealed the giant dunes. After gathering some info and a few more license plates for our game at the visitors center we were headed to find a campsite. Driving through the loop of the campsites we found the perfect one with a great view of the dunes, but we had a slight problem backing into the spot. We blocked the road for a few minutes someone finally came and moved their truck which gave us a few extra feet to work with. We got our tent set up and went for a little hike on to the dunes. When the sun goes down behind the mountains it gets cold pretty fast, so we hustled back and got some warmer clothes on. As soon as we did another storm rolled in. Hunkering down in the tent to avoid the wind and rain was not to bad. We let the storm die down and it was time for dinner. The rain came back again so we had a romantic head lamp lit hot dog dinner. The next morning we woke up freezing cold, it was about 40 degrees. We got up ate some breakfast filled up on water. With the goal of reaching the top of the tallest dune we could see we took off on our hike. Navigating in sand dunes is a little tricky they are very steep and kind of misleading. it is hard to tell how steep and tall they are till you are on them. Choosing a route that i thought looked easiest we pushed on. Half way up we had determined that maybe this wasn't the easiest route, and it was looking steeper and steeper. Since that both of us were fully committed we kept climbing. Finally reaching the top we could really get a full view of ow massive the dunes really were. It was nice to get a well deserved break. While sitting on top of the dunes we watched a couple struggle with the same route we struggled with. Resting, re hydrating, and playing at the top of the dunes was a lot of fun and it gave time for the couple from New Mexico to reach the top. after taking a bunch of pictures a bunch of pictures and getting to know our new friends we found out that they were the ones i was blocking in while trying to back into our parking spot. After we took in the view and played around a while it started to get pretty hot on our feet. lucky for us it takes no time at all to get down. Getting down is the most fun you get going pretty fast running down the dunes. it also gave Candace the opportunity to snag one of the best pictures of the trip so far. Down off the dune and packed up we started heading to Denver. As soon as we got back on the highway we got some good news. We can move into our apartment Wednesday.
